CENTRAL HEATING

Has anyone who posts on the forum, or does anyone know anybody who has had Gas Central Heating put in their property. Any comments would be appreciated.

La Marina

I plus a lot of others would be interested in information from anyone who reads La Marina Forum as to if using gas is viable?

I am having someone call on me tomorrow to discuss putting it in my place. As we have a garge under our property they will be able to put the pipes up through so we wont have a lot of pipes in the rooms. They say you can run 5 radiators and the hot water for 1 11kg gas bottle a week which is roughly 64 euros a month. Taking our fuel allowance into consideration, we can purchase 20 gas bottles with that and you would not need that amount during the winter. At a cost of 2,995 euros for 5 radiators and a combi boiler, if you can keep warm in the winter, it seems quite a good idea. I will post more when I know more.

I had Gas (bottled) central heating in a property that I rented from September 2008 to March 2009. I could not believe how expensive it was. At the time I was paying 80 euros for each large canister and we were using almost two a week. It was a four bedroomed place, but we kept one bedroom locked up and the place never felt warm.
I now have my own place and we installed Oil Central heating last August. It is certainly a lot cheaper to run than Gas, so as long as you have room for a tank, I would thoroughly recommend it. We had our first warm winter last year and do not dread the onset of winter in the coming months.

John who fitted your oil central heating as we have a garage we could have a tank put in. Thanks Eve

Commented Caroline in La Marina 2012-09-16 11:31:10 UTC

My oil fired central heating was installed by Mark Blacklock, from Polop. It is quite a journey, but he is often on the Urb, and gets up very early. His numbers are - 966 897 772, 680 154 432 and 675 265 675. He trades as Excel (Experts in air conditioning and central heating)
He really did us proud, but I have heard there are others that do it if you want to compare prices.

Commented Frizzy in La Marina 2012-09-16 13:17:31 UTC

Thanks for the info John I will call him and talk to him. It is just as well to get a few quotes but recommendation is always the best.

Commented Caroline in La Marina 2012-09-16 13:23:23 UTC

Has anyone else had Oil Heating installed would be interested at the running costs and installation cost. Seems gas is rather pricey.

Commented Ian in La Marina 2012-09-16 14:16:08 UTC

Ian I think Gas could be very pricey if you have a large property but for a smaller place with 5 rads I don't think 17 euros a week is too bad. I also think the Oil Fired Central heating is more expensive to install but I am going to look at all avenues before deciding. I have to be warm, I would rather be hungry than cold.

Commented Caroline in La Marina 2012-09-16 14:50:59 UTC

i have the gas central heating with a combi boiler used to be fantastic untill gas went so expensive now we hardly use it

Commented robo18 in La Marina 2012-09-16 17:35:41 UTC

Robo how many radiators do you have and is it correct that an 11kg gas bottle will last the week?

Commented Caroline in La Marina 2012-09-16 18:00:56 UTC

I have spent the last 45 years in plumbing/heating my wife & I moved to La Marina last September we have 9 radiators all running of 50+ ltr gas bottles the boiler is not new but has been serviced every year last winter cost us 1 bottle of gas every week so our average cost to heat both hot water & heating cost us 200e ever month we tried everything to reduce our costs nothing worked you may think that I am lying but I beg you to only get your real running costs not from the seller of heating units but from those who actually use them, don't fall for the sales pitch if you run your heating @ a lower tempriture you can save big bucks it's a lie heating switches of & on on automatically

Commented Yorkiedt in La Marina 2012-09-16 18:25:54 UTC

We have gas central heating....3 bedrooms, 2 bath, 2 lounges....all of which are used. Last winter was the first in this house. We have industrial gas bottles at €65 per bottle, said bottle lasts 5 days, and that is using the minimum.....1 hour on getting up, and evening switch on at 9 to heat the bedrooms before bed. Last winter cost us €600 plus small bottles for gas heaters to compensate for not being able to afford to run the heating!!
It is humungously expensive. This winter I will be buying wood!!

Commented Maz in La Marina 2012-09-16 18:37:25 UTC

Well, hello. Unimformed in Uk and some people here say we're living in a warm climate so shouldn't get winter heating allowance................
We won't go there again we've just had a huge debate on this subject. I feel so lucky to live here so we just cope with our big bills. Keep this debate on central heating going as we'd gladly invest in it if it was worth it

Commented mazza in La Marina 2012-09-16 19:50:16 UTC

John where do you buy your gas oil from and roughly how much is it per litre. I am not sure how much a tank would hold.

Commented Caroline in La Marina 2012-09-17 05:43:44 UTC

We got ours from Lubrirep S.L.. The first delivery of 1000 litres cost us 910 euros on 15th July last year (a bit earlier than I thought). The second delivery was 852 litres which cost 834.96 on 8th February this year. (98 cents per litre). We have about 300 litres left as at today. We have only been absent for about 3 weeks over that year, which includes 2 weeks in August.
We have a 3 bedroom detached villa which is about 200 sq m built - so I find the cost acceptable. It is certainly warm in the winter.
The other thing worth a mention is that as the heating now also does hot water on demand our electricity bill dropped by about 20 euros a month, and my wife can have hot baths!.
One other point. I was worried about smell, but it is insignificant and nothing like the Calor Gas heaters we had in the 2009 and 2010 winters.
It is so nice to come home to a warm place in the winter!

Commented Frizzy in La Marina 2012-09-17 08:35:45 UTC

How many months were you running the heating? And how many hours per day?

Commented Maz in La Marina 2012-09-17 08:42:21 UTC

I had it put in 1 year ago. It is a combi boiler using oil as its energy source. No problems so far other than I needed to get a water purifier (between 500 and 1000 euros) to stop the thermostat from calcifying.
We also bought towel rails but imported them from England as they are much cheaper.

Commented laurie Malyon in La Marina 2012-09-17 09:19:12 UTC

Hi Ian, I did about a year ago and it seems pretty cheap. Only used about 800 Euros worth of oil in that time and that if for heating and hot water.

Commented laurie Malyon in La Marina 2012-09-17 09:21:11 UTC

For my oil heating, we had it coming on for a couple of hours in the morning and about 6 hours in the evening. I do not remember when we started using the heating, but we carried on using it until April.
I already had an Eddy water softner things that I bought from Tommy for under 200 euros (who also does water filters). It is fitted on the water inlet pipe and plugged into a socket. I don;t understand how it works - but it does, and we never have blocked up kettles, shower heads or anything else. Tommy is contactable on 627 769 102.

Commented Frizzy in La Marina 2012-09-17 09:55:03 UTC

Just had a quotation for the Gas Central heating. For 6 radiators its 3,185 and that includes a combi boiler for hot water. They say you can run it for 6-7 days on 1 x 11kg cylinder and these cylinders are about 14 euros each. From our fuel allowance we should be able to buy about 25 cylinders which should see us through the winter, also the electric bill should reduce as we will not be using it to hot our water. We will have full certificates from the Gas company. If anyone is interested we will have a Water Boiler for sale purchased a few weeks ago. It is a 50 ltr Ariston Eco boiler.

Hi Eve,

I am so glad that you are able to put the Winter Fuel Payment to good use. It will help to keep you warm this winter xx

Myra

Commented Myra Davis in La Marina 2012-09-19 14:37:10 UTC

Hi Myra
Thank you for your wishes. I know over 3,000 euros is a lot to find but I can remember paying over £2,000 to have central heating in England. These places are cold over here in the winter and I was quite miserable last winter trying to keep warm, we have the £300.00 fuel allowance because of my husbands age so we might as well spend it keeping warm in our own home. Cheers Eve xx

Commented Caroline in La Marina 2012-09-19 16:30:12 UTC

I have no regrets about my original Winter Fuel Payment post. If only one person who is entitled claims I feel that I have done some good, despite some of the negative comments that were aimed at me. Sticks and bones. I will pop over to the pet charity shop to see you about volunteering when I get to La Marina. Will be out either on the 10th of October or the 24th. Will know for definite the week after next.

Kind Regards

Myra

I look forward to meeting you Myra. At the moment we have 110 dogs in the kennels in Dolores awaiting adoption. It is very sad to see them all there. I try not to come into contact with them as I would like to bring them all home.
I hope you have a good journey over. Hasta Luego. Eve

Commented Caroline in La Marina 2012-09-19 19:01:57 UTC

Eve.....if you can run 6 radiators on 1 x 11 kg bottle for 7 days then good luck. We have 9 rads and we went through 1x 60 kg bottle in 5 days!!!

Commented Maz in La Marina 2012-09-19 19:07:05 UTC

Maz I can assure you that if I am using that amount of gas the company concerned will definitely hear about it and I will make there name public on this forum. I do not expect to run the system 24/7 but I will expect it to be reasonably close to their sales patter.

Commented Caroline in La Marina 2012-09-19 19:19:15 UTC

I wish you well with your gas if your heating costs are 10 times less than everyone else's we who already use ( or not ) our gas heating will look forward to hearing your opinion in 12 months. Just a reminder from my last post on this issue 3 days ago Salesmen have been known to lie just to get a sale we on the other hand only have our experiences & a lot less cash in our bank accounts.

Commented Yorkiedt in La Marina 2012-09-19 19:30:00 UTC

I cannot comment on these figures as I will have to wait and see. Our electric bills were pretty high last winter trying to keep our place warm, I need the atmosphere around me to be warm. I cannot keep warm by putting on extra layers. If the cost is higher then we shall have to stop eating out so much. A cylinder of gas is cheaper than 2 meals out so we will have to get our priorities right.

Commented Caroline in La Marina 2012-09-19 20:01:48 UTC

Eve, we have had gas central heating for years using the small bottles.A little tip, when the bottles get a bit low and the pressure is not able to send gas through if you have a portable gas fire there is usually enough left in the bottle for a few hours heat .We use this for early morning or lunch time when in the house and keep the central heating for late afternoons unless extremely cold.Every little helps!

Commented hazel in La Marina 2012-09-20 10:45:33 UTC

Hi Eve

have you thought to ask the company to invite you to talk to other customers of theres about the running costs.

Good luck and keep us posted

Commented FOX160 in La Marina 2012-09-21 01:47:39 UTC

Our electric bills were quite high last year and I was still cold so I am not going to worry as long as we are warm. If we lived in England our council tax would be more than it is going to cost us for Gas during the winter here. Our fuel allowance is about 375 euros. The gas we will be using is about 14 euros a cylinder so we are going to have to use quite a few cylinders before we have spent that and we shall be saving on our electric bills so all in all I think its affordable.

Commented Caroline in La Marina 2012-09-21 05:28:58 UTC

I can you tell me where to get gas bottles for €14 the last one I bought was just over €17

Commented david in La Marina 2012-09-21 06:16:06 UTC

New address is Shirley3mills I have gas central heating with a gas tank many problems wish I stuck to bottles the gas companies fight and cheat you if you do get it don't ever change companies no matter what they tell you as they will both charge you for years had to get a solicitor in the end to sort it out

Commented Shirley2mills in La Marina 2012-09-21 07:40:16 UTC

Bet it will cost a lot more than that

Commented Shirley2mills in La Marina 2012-09-21 07:41:43 UTC

I agree oil is best

Commented Shirley2mills in La Marina 2012-09-21 07:42:31 UTC

Plus you have to have a ten year lease of their tank so there is no way of getting out of it with gas I would not bother .go for the oil central heating every time

Commented Shirley2mills in La Marina 2012-09-21 07:43:59 UTC

Different gas - different price.

Eve
Have you thought about cavity wall insulation, remember a lot of the properties on the urb have a small cavity.

Commented Golfer in La Marina 2012-12-24 09:58:33 UTC

We don't have any cavities Golfer as we live in an older style property. The gas Central Heating is working a treat and up to now I have no problems with the cost. We have air con but would need all four units on to keep the place warm and as you all know when we wanted to put the cooker on, the electric would trip out. If you look at the cost of keeping yourself warm in England, over a year, I am sure it will not work out any dearer here. Don't forget our winters are shorter.
